It's Time for a Road Trip!

Road trip number deux!
But this road trip is actually not only one road trip; it's two.
Any guesses?
Anyone? Anyone?
Well...
while I am right this very moment going on a Metaphorical Road Trip,
I recently went on an Actual Road Trip,
both of which are Very Good Things!
So first of order, I took an Actual Road Trip to my family cabin over the weekend.
(Another Very Good Thing because my college doesn't give us a spring break. Waa.)
And one of many good things about that trip was that I got to make almost exactly the same trip that I'll be making while moving to the Santa Barbara area at the end of May!
(Yes, a Very Good Thing.)
Another good thing about this Actual Road Trip was that I got to do this.

Nuff said.
(Recognize that lovely font anyone?)
;)

SO!
For our metaphorical road trip today
--otherwise known as a YA Highway Roadtrip--

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This Week's Topic: The Veronica Mars Kickstarter success makes us wonder, what YA book would you raise $2 million to see a movie version of?

I will be taking you back a little bit to yesteryear...
A Great and Terrible Beauty, Libba Bray

Yep, guys. This little gem
(Gem-a? LOL)
My best friend and other bookish half, Emily, sort of disagrees and thinks that Libba Bray's Diviners series would make a better movie, and it's not that I wouldn't also LOVE to see it on the big screen,
(Have I maybe heard a rumor somewheres that it's being optioned? Don't quote me on that though!)
The Gemma Doyle trilogy just really has the sentimental value for me.
This book was easily the first series after Harry Potter that I fell truly in love with.
Back in a time when I didn't know any living author's names, besides J. K. Rowling's of course.
Back in a time when I went into the big wide book store not knowing the new releases that were already on shelves or having Goodreads reviews to skew my treasure hunt.
Back when a book store was just that, a book store, and all the magical intrigue that comes with those two beautiful words.
I flew through this series as fast as I did the Harry Potter series because I liked it that much, which is saying something coming down from a HP high.
And I was SO EXCITED  to hear that it was being optioned.
I freaking had my cast picked out and everything!
But it fell through.
And now I want my movie!!!!

  1. Oh, that Harry Potter high. That was a hard one to come off of - and I still experience withdrawals from time to time.

I love that Harry Potter introduces so many new people to the love of reading - only problem is that then they are left on their own to figure out the world of books and find their next exciting adventure. We should have a "Reading after Harry Potter FOR DUMMIES" book to help in that struggle.

    1. Girl, that is genius sauce right there! "Reading After Harry Potter FOR DUMMIES" Let's make it happen.

Oh and I literally remember going into Barnes the day after I finished Deathly Hallows, looking for a new book, and thinking, "Holy crap! Where do I start?" Girls in pretty dresses in a creepy, Gothic, mystical school in England seemed like a pretty good start. And it was!

  2. Enjoyed The Gemma Doyle Series until she killed Kartik. I bummed hard on that for a while. But the realms would be awesome to see imagined in CG.

    1. Oh gosh, yeah that was definitely a crash course in rip-year-hear/soul out moments in fiction for me. Of course at that point I had lost ya know, Dobby, Sirius, Dumbledore, Fred, Tonks, Hedwig!!!
But in the end I was satisfied with Gemma's character arc. I thought it was a beautiful, if very sad, ending.

  3. I've never read any Libba Bray, but I've seen her books recommended. Potter set a high standard for series that followed. It truly is high praise that I consider my choice for today's RTW the best series I've read since Potter.

  4. THE DIVINERS ALL THE WAY, DUDE!

I'd be happy if it was super cool tv show. Wouldn't it look totally rad in black and white? Although, giving it a very bright and extravagant look like The Great Gatsby movie would be pretty sweet, too.

    1. I agree whole hog, either one end of the color spectrum or the other. And TV show would be sooooo cool, maybe even better than a movie because there are SO MANY CHARACTERS that all need their due attention.

  5. I just read The Diviners and I loved it...but I think the Gemma Doyle books are my favorite just for the sentimental value. (Also, this is a VERY GOOD example of why covers are important because the only reason I picked this one up was for the cover!)

Great minds DO think alike :)

    1. I can't remember exactly why I picked it up, but it was most likely the cover. I shop by covers now and I probably did back then. Haha! But I also thought the title was gorgeous too!

      ;D
